THE CROSSROADS STORY

Nancy Atchue: A Life of Service, A Passion for Healing

For Nancy Atchue, service has always been a way of life. From her time in the military, where she worked in communications for nuclear weapons in the European theater, to her career in law enforcement, she has firsthand experience with the unique challenges faced by those in high-stress, high-risk professions. She knows the weight of responsibility, the toll of trauma, and the difficulty of asking for help.

Nancy’s personal journey led her to the behavioral health field, where she has spent over a decade specializing in addiction recovery and trauma therapy. She has witnessed, both professionally and personally, how unresolved substance use and trauma can take a life hostage. She has witnessed, both professionally and personally, how unresolved substance use and trauma can take a life hostage. She has witnessed, both professionally and personally, how unresolved trauma and substance use can take a life hostage. That’s why she founded At the Crossroads Therapy—to provide a trusted space for military personnel, veterans, and first responders to seek support from someone who understands their world.

"I have walked a mile in your combat boots," Nancy often tells her clients. Having spent four years on isolated duty in Germany, she knows what it’s like to experience PTSD and the silent battles that follow. Transitioning back to civilian life, she joined law enforcement, continuing her mission to protect and serve. But over time, she saw the need for something greater—a pathway to healing for those who give everything to their careers but often struggle to care for themselves.

Now, as a Licensed Associate Addiction Counselor (LAAC) serving Arizona, California, and Alaska, Nancy combines her lived experience, clinical expertise, and deep compassion to guide individuals through addiction recovery, trauma healing, and personal transformation. She focuses on building life skills, strengthening coping mechanisms, and breaking the cycles of addiction—helping her clients reclaim their lives and relationships.

At the Crossroads Therapy, Nancy is committed to helping those who have served—whether in the military or on the front lines of law enforcement—find hope, healing, and a renewed sense of purpose. Because those who dedicate their lives to protecting others deserve the same level of care and support in return.

The Power of Lived Experience in Treating Law Enforcement & Veterans

When it comes to guiding veterans and law enforcement officers through addiction recovery and trauma healing, clinical knowledge alone isn’t always enough. True understanding comes from lived experience—firsthand knowledge of the pressures, sacrifices, and struggles that come with service.

As a veteran-owned company, At the Crossroads Therapy was founded on the values of service, resilience, and real-world experience. We recognize the unique challenges faced by those who have served, and that’s why working with a therapist who has walked that same path makes all the difference.

Supporting Veterans in Their Transition to Civilian Life

Serving in the military instills discipline, purpose, and camaraderie, but transitioning back into civilian life can be one of the hardest battles a veteran faces. Whether it’s substance use, combat stress, PTSD, survivor’s guilt, or the loss of military identity, the shift can feel overwhelming. Addiction often becomes a way to cope with these challenges, making recovery and reintegration even more difficult.

Having served as a U.S. Army Communications Specialist in the European Theater, I understand the unique struggles that come with deployment, isolated duty, and reintegration. I also know that traditional therapy approaches don’t always align with the military mindset. That’s why I focus on practical, direct, and solution-based therapy that acknowledges military culture while prioritizing addiction recovery and addressing emotional and psychological needs.

📌 Why lived experience matters in veteran therapy:
✔ Understanding the psychological impact of combat, long-term deployment, and addiction
✔ Recognizing the difficulty of losing military identity after service
✔ Addressing
addiction, PTSD, anxiety, and hypervigilance with effective coping strategies
✔ Helping veterans rebuild a sense of purpose and direction in civilian life

At the Crossroads Therapy, we don’t just offer therapy—we offer a connection built on shared experience. When veterans sit across from me, they know they’re talking to someone who truly understands—someone who has been through it, survived it, and found a way forward.
